7in7: A City on a Hill

2012 was a big year for a number people in many different ways.  Some had tremendous growth and prosperity~ new jobs, getting married, having baby’s.  You know…life!  But last year was a significant year for others in a not so positive way.  A City was torn a part; entire work places destroyed.  Families were threatened and yes, many lost their loved ones.  Though this initially brief description of deficit seems ridiculously hopeless…Joplin, MO has proven otherwise!  We were asked to volunteer our photography time to photographically document the amazing work of hundreds of volunteers all over the country.  They came for one purpose: to build 7 beautiful homes in 7 days under the ever so encouraging show Extreme Makeovers: Home Edition.  So, ABC called and our Joplin Smile troops were assembled.

To summarize our experience…it was so wonderful!  The quality of the homes is impeccable.  The EMH teams were still in great spirits even after the lengthy days of production!!  The homes, in short, are just as amazing in person as they are sitting on your living room couch.  Past the commercial of it all, seeing in person the family photos, hearing their stories, and the devastation that surrounded this new neighborhood was intense.  Stories of survival and loss were still so fresh. This new neighborhood now gives a sense of energy to the area that even the best is yet to come!!  We were seriously so thankful to be a part of it all.

Tonight we watched it all unfold as EMH and the community chanted, “Move That Bus!” over and over.  Watching the families respond and receive these beautiful homes was so gratifying.  To hear their heartbreak and now see their faces glow with encouragement was fantastic.  Praise God for His Love, Peace and Mercy!!  And as these families enter 2012 in their new homes as well as the entire Joplin City, we pray that they will all know God’s peace and love like nothing that they’ve ever known; that EMH has given them direction and hope as well and that Joplin will rise so far above the destruction that their light will be seen on top of their newly found hill.

Thank you ABC for choosing us to be a part of it all.  We were truly blessed!

love, j&a

You have captured the love shown to this hurting community. The pictures are great and tell the story of these awesome families and their new homes/lifes.
